Rescue after kayakers get into difficulties in North Sea
TWO kayakers had to be rescued after one of them got into difficulties in the changing sea conditions.
The pair had been out in the North Sea on Saturday, January 12, when one of the kayaks overturned around 100 metres off the north end of Tynemouth Long Sands beach.
A member of the public raised the alarm at around 1.20pm after seeing the duo in trouble, with Cullercoats RNLI Inshore Lifeboat and members of Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade racing to the scene.
Members of the TVLB kept watch on the men while the lifeboat arrived on scene and took the pair back to Cullercoats Bay.
A spokesperson for the TVLB said: “Once ashore they confirmed that they did not require any medical assistance and explained that they had both been out in kayaks when they had got into difficulties due to the challenging sea conditions.
“One of the men managed to swim his kayak ashore before he went back into the sea to help his friend.
“However, the pair were unable to get the second kayak back to land and were grateful for the help they received.”
