Residents' suggestions bring range of events

A RANGE of events and projects are set to take place in North Tyneside thanks to suggestions by residents.

And one of those is being held this weekend, with people invited to listen to the songs of the sea.

A Strandings event has been organised by Culture Quarter to take place on St Mary's Island on Sunday, June 7, from 2pm.

People are invited to listen to an afternoon of 'Songs of the Sea' and there will be plenty of opportunities to join in.

It is one suggested Culture Quarter have received since it opened in March and asked for ideas and projects which could be held.

Local author Gordon Phillips has written lyrics for a new musical called 'The Square and Compass – songs about a tiny island off the Northumbrian coast'.

Culture Quarter has arranged for a composer to put music to the lyrics, and the end result will be a musical which will tell the story of the island, complete with murder, quarantined Russian soldiers, skeletons in the pub cellar, shipwrecks and piracy.

Christine Savage, CQ chairman, said: "We are delighted to be the catalyst for new art and new musical productions in the town.

"There is so much to celebrate in the history of our area, and so many people who want to be involved in remembering the events that made us what we are.

"We also want to assist other artists and craftspeople, and encourage them to bring us their ideas so that we can help to shape them, and turn them into reality."
