POLICE in Wallsend are calling on traders to join forces to help tackle shoplifting.

Officers from the Wallsend neighbourhood policing team are urging retailers to join the town’s shopwatch scheme and held a meeting at Acorn Computers, in High Street East, to try to drum up support.

Neighbourhood beat managers Pc John Tierney said: “These retail schemes have been successful in other areas in helping stores reduce crime.

“Shop theft can cost stores dearly and reduce their profitability.”

Jill Ruffles, secretary of Wallsend Chamber of Trade, added: “By working together, we can help reduce crime and support to our shops.”

John Fleet, town centres manager for North Tyneside Council, added: “The Shopwatch scheme is well supported in North Shields and Whitley Bay, and as a result has been very successful. I’d urge Wallsend retailers to get behind their scheme, and help us keep Wallsend a great place to shop.”
