Rethink on gypsy sites

NORTH Tyneside Mayor Linda Arkley has backed a decision by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles that could see plans for gypsy and travellers' sites scrapped.

Local authorities had been asked to set requirements on the provision of land for travelling communities.

However, concerns were raised by authorities, including North Tyneside Council, that such sites would have to be developed on popular green spaces.

Mr Pickles now says he wants to redress the balance and take communities' feelings into account.

Mrs Arkley said: "I am pleased that Eric Pickles has listened to the concerns of councils who don't currently have permanent gypsy and traveller sites.

"I made personal representations to the Government to share the concerns of residents of North Tyneside, and I am delighted with this outcome."
