A HAIR salon for children has proved to be a cut above the rest after winning a prestigious regional award.

Owners of Fidgets, based in Marden Road, Whitley Bay, are celebrating after being crowned ‘Success of the Year’ at the Glass Slipper Awards.

Run by Nicky Gray and Susan Tonks, Fidgets was nominated by Claire Catherall, whose six-year-old son Ryan was the inspiration behind the idea.

Ryan, Nicky’s nephew, is severely autistic, struggling to cope with every day things, including a hair cut.

After watching Ryan go through the ordeal of an hair cut, Nicky set up a salon making it fun for children and toddlers.

Children can choose from a range of character cars to sit in and watch a DVD while having their hair cut.

Nicky and Susan received the award at the ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel, Gateshead, pipping Sarah Hall, of Sarah Hall Consulting, and Patsie Beaton, of Eldon Square, to the award.

Susan said: “We were just so delighted to be a finalist, we didn’t even consider winning this award.

“When we both heard our names we sat in shock and could not believe it.”

Nicky added: “We dedicated this award to Ryan.

“Seeing the world through his eyes made me realise just how hard and challenging life can be for autistic children, and if I can take one small step to making that a bit easier, I will.”

Fidgets was launched by Nicky in 2010, with Susan joining last year to help grow the brand.

They now offer Princess Parties, Retro Booth parties, pamper sessions and a line of children hair products.
