School celebrates the environment
PUPILS at a North Shields school marked the end of their year with a special event to highlight all the environmental work they have been involved in.
Christ Church Primary School, in Kielder Terrace, held an eco-festival to mark the culmination of an environmental awareness week.
A total of 12 organisations visited the school for the festival, including Greenpeace, the RSPB and the Wildlife Trust.
And such has been the work of the children over the year, the school was awarded the prestigious Green Flag status for their environmental awareness.
Over the year, the children were involved in work with North Tyneside Council, the Langdale Centre, other schools and now members of the public say they are beginning to notice an improvement.
Headteachers and teachers from other schools are now visiting Christ Church for advice on guidance on how to achieve Green Flag status.
Teacher Dan Heron said: "We will be working just as hard next year."
Children aged between five and 11 have been involved in a host of activities over the year including voluntary work at Northumberland Park and the Rising Sun Country Park, bird watching, planting trees on behalf of the Wildlife Trust, collecting old phones to be recycled, introduce recycling at the school, record the wildlife in their grounds, and sponsored a dolphin pond in Scotland.
And work is already in place for when pupils return in September, including a beach clean up with the Marine Conservation Society and Blue Reef Aquarium.
