School gets top award for its safety

A SCHOOL is celebrating after it scooped a top award for its safety work.

Bailey Green Primary School has been recognised by The National Safety Certification Scheme for Schools – known as ‘SafetyMARK’ – for having ‘excellent’ safety standards.

During an inspection at the Killingworth school, assessors agreed that staff demonstrated ‘first class’ levels of safety management and, in doing so, achieved the SafetyMARK award for excellence.

The award scheme aims to provide guidance for schools and to recognise and reward those schools that have gone the extra mile to create a safe environment for staff, pupils, visitors and contractors.

Headteacher Lisa Taylor said they were thrilled to get the award.

“We take the safety of our staff and pupils extremely seriously and it’s wonderful to have this recognition for all of our efforts to make our school such a safe place to work and study,” she said.

“Having achieved the award, we can demonstrate our on-going commitment to maintaining excellence in the management of health and safety within our school.”

During the inspection, assessors checked all areas of the school were safe and secure, safety policies were in place and risk assessments were carried out.

Stuart Letley, from SafetyMARK, said: “Bailey Green School has a really positive attitude with regard to health and safety and it is clear to see that safety is taken extremely seriously and that it is very well managed.

“The staff have established a robust health and safety system and culture that is amongst the best in the country and we are delighted to recognise that fact with this prestigious award.”
