Scouts' day of activities to mark anniversary

TYNEMOUTH Scouts will be showing what its like to be involved in modern Scouting to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Scout Association.

Tynemouth Scouts are staging a day of activities that their members get to do on Beaconsfield, next to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth, on Saturday, September 29, between 10.30am and 3pm for members of the public.

Mick Morland, Scout Leader with the 13th Tynemouth and event organiser, said: "The numbers of people involved in Scouting in Tynemouth is increasing every year, and we want to increase the numbers even more by showing people what it is all about.

"We are hoping once people realise we don't wear big hats and baggy shorts any more and they see what we actually do, they might decide to join us."

The event will have a number of side show type stalls and refreshments for people to spend some money on but the main activities will all be free and is planned to include activities such as archery, mountain boarding, grass sledging, a rat run and a climbing wall.

Group Scout leader with the 8th Tynemouth Norman Robson said: "Some of the activities will have age restrictions on them, the same as we have to impose on our members at the minute, but the idea is to let as many people have a try of our activities as possible which is why all the main ones are free.

"We don't want to restrict the activities to young people either, we are particularly keen to get adults to join us, either as a leader or as a skills instructor which means you are not tied to giving up a set amount of time each week, you can help when ever you have some time to spare."
