Skate park work starts

CONTRACTORS have moved on site to begin work on the new skate park for Whitley Bay.

The new facility, in the Panama Dip on the site of the former Panama Caf on The Links has been designed in consultation with skateboarders, BMX users and rollerbladers and when finished it will deliver a skating area of approximately 1,000 square metres.

It will incorporate two bowls, ramps, driveways and walls as well as special features, a hubba, a jersey barrier, a wall ride, taco, pier 7, and a street area with blocks and grind rails.

Elected Mayor John Harrison said: "Both residents and are young people have told us that providing additional facilities and activities for our youngsters is a top priority.

"Our young people have been involved in this new skate park from the beginning, so I'm delighted that they have been able to come along today to see that work is underway.

"The regeneration of Whitley Bay is about the rebirth of the town for all citizens and the borough of North Tyneside. We have already provided a play park that is proving a success with children and families and I am confident that the skate park will be welcomed and well used by our young people when it opens in the summer."

The development of the skate park is the latest element of Whitley Bay's regeneration programme that is moving towards fruition.

Dan Petruska, of North Shields added: "It's fantastic to have something locally.

"Young people have to travel to South Shields or Newcastle currently for skate parks. We have spent three years working to get one for Whitley Bay."

An 8m refurbishment of Whitley Bay Playhouse will transform the 90-year-old building to include an elegant new glass foyer and new front of house facilities, plus a redesigned 650-seat auditorium, new green room and chorus rooms.

Work continues on Whitley Bay Leisure Pool which is undergoing a multi-million revitalisation, including innovative active water-play equipment for children and a flume, an improved gym, sauna, steam rooms and a dance studio with new changing village.

And the transformation of the Spanish City and the seafront regeneration scheme is forging ahead.
