Slimmers who gave their wardrobes a spring clean have helped raise money for a cancer charity.
Members of Slimming World groups in North Tyneside took part in ‘The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’ in support of Cancer Research UK.
Their unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories were collected and donated to Cancer Research UK shops, with officials hoping each bag could raise around £25.
Brian Bell, one of the team developers at Slimming World, said: “Our members have really embraced this campaign and they have been more than happy to donate their ‘big’ clothes.
“Between them members have donated over 600 bags, hopefully raising over £15,000 and on top of all that have lost loads of weight since January.
“The money raised will support Cancer Research UK’s research that helps to find new treatments and, in the long term a cure for cancer.”
He added: “One in three of us are affected by cancer and being overweight increases the risk of developing the disease, so we’re determined to do anything we can do to help fight cancer and help people lead healthier lives.”
“At our groups each week we support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life.”
Cheryl Richardson, who has lost 2 stone 7lbs since joining last November, said: “I found it really liberating to get rid of all my old clothes and I’m not worried about ever needing them again because this is the new me now.
“It’s easy to take your health for granted and I think it’s so important to support causes that help others that aren’t in good health.”
Amanda Jackson, from Cancer Research UK, said: “We welcome clothes and items of all shapes, sizes and styles and were absolutely thrilled to receive two van loads of clothing from Slimming World in North Tyneside.
“We’re delighted that they’ve chosen to use their slimming success to raise money for Cancer Research UK – it makes a real difference to our fundraising efforts and it’s good to raise awareness that being overweight increases cancer risk too.”
