Spectacular display to light up Regatta's skyline

A fabulous pyrotechnical display will illuminate The North Sea Tall Ships Regatta Blyth 2016 and visitors will be able to enjoy the fireworks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Organisers have appointed the first set of suppliers for the event including a fireworks display company, caterers, drinks concessions, and sound and lighting providers.

G2 from Middlesbrough will be providing the fireworks which will be part of a spectacular nightly entertainment show at Blyth harbour choreographed around a specially-commissioned 20-minute music and visual performance.

The music and visual arts for the performance have been commissioned by Active Northumberland, working with community groups across south east Northumberland, funded by Arts Council England and Northumberland County Council.

Organisers have also appointed a host of other suppliers for the Regatta to help deliver the event including Pitched Events from Newcastle who will be erecting one of their distinctive ‘sailcloth’ marquees, featuring sculpted peaks and eaves, for the event.

Culture Creative from Alnwick are managing the event and Mark Deakin, from New Hartley, organiser of the North East Chilli Fest, will be managing the ‘Northumberland Village’, an area of the event that will showcase Northumberland businesses and visitor attractions.

Angelfish of Corbridge have been contracted as a food supplier, and local companies including Hi-lights from Gateshead, Nitelites from North Shields, and SiteLink from Washington, will assist with lighting, sound and staging, and radio communications.

Northumberland County Council, in partnership with the Port of Blyth and Sail Training International, is hosting the prestigious Regatta from Friday, August 26, to Monday, August 29, with Fergusons of Blyth the Principal Sponsor.

Organisers have been keen to use local suppliers and businesses wherever possible to help the region to benefit from the Regatta.

Coun Val Tyler, cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture at the County Council, said: “The Regatta is an excellent opportunity for local suppliers and large events such as this and last year’s Tour of Britain, are very important for our economy.

“We want to use the event to promote local suppliers and showcase the county for business and as an international tourist destination, and help our communities and businesses to gain maximum benefit from the Regatta.”

Martin Lawlor, chief executive, Port of Blyth, said: “Suppliers from the north east are helping us to deliver this important international event and this is an opportunity to show that we have a first-class county with excellent port services and business infrastructure.

“The fireworks will be a Regatta highlight and will look amazing against the backdrop of the magnificent Tall Ships. Visitors will be able to get wonderful views all the way along the harbour along the full length of Commissioners and Dun Cow Quays.”

Up to 30 Tall Ships are expected to gather at Blyth for the Regatta.
