More homes and businesses in North Shields are set to benefit from superfast fibre broadband.

More than 1,000 properties now have access to the high-speed technology, with the figure set to increase to more than 19,000 as BT Openreach engineers complete the local upgrade in the coming weeks.

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell has welcomed the new technology.

He said: “Superfast fibre broadband in North Shields offers huge benefits to local residents and businesses and will help our local economy to flourish.

“Better, faster communications help businesses to grow and stimulate job creation.

“At home, local people can do more online and at faster speeds. This is great news for North Shields and I look forward to fibre broadband being rolled out across the constituency.”

Fibre broadband is already available to more than 49,500 premises in Whitley Bay, Killingworth, Benton and Wallsend.

Farooq Hakim, BT’s regional director for the north east, said: “Our roll-out of fibre broadband is advancing across North Tyneside with North Shields the latest place to benefit.”
