Supermarket to take over Co-op store
SUPERMARKET Morrisons is to take over the Co-op store in Wallsend.
Staff at the Forum Shopping Centre site will automatically be transferred to Morrisons when the takeover, subject to confirmation from the Office of Fair Trading, takes place in April.
Morrisons is the fourth largest supermarket in the UK, and group Store operations director Mark Gunter said the company is looking forward to serving the people of Wallsend.
"We are delighted to announce that we have agreed to purchase this store from the Co-Operative Group.
"In the coming weeks, we look forward to holding welcome meetings, one-to-one sessions and full company inductions that will inform staff all about our business and what joining Morrisons will mean for them.
"This will be in addition to offering a comprehensive training and live experience programme."
A spokesperson for the Co-op said: "The sale arises out of the group's proposed acquisition of the Somerfield supermarket chain and is conditional on the completion of the Somerfield purchase.
"We are on track to complete the Somerfield acquisition in the first quarter of 2009."
