Taking a leap into business

BUDDING entrepreneurs are being encouraged to take a leap and build on any business ideas.

A ‘Leap into Business’ event is being organised by the Business Factory to harvest and encourage new business ideas.

Among those offering help and advice will be entrepreneur Carol Metcalfe, founder of Musa Fine Art.

The single mother left school with no qualifications but set up her successful social enterprise back in 1994 whilst juggling a full time job and parenthood, since going on to set up five businesses – two of which she still runs today.

Carol will be joined by coaches from The Business Factory who will be offering idea generation sessions to help individuals identify the skills they already have to make a leap into business.

The Business Factory – delivered by enterprise agency TEDCO on behalf of North Tyneside Council – has already helped create 370 new businesses in the borough and encourage more than 2,500 people to consider self-employment.

The event on Wednesday, February 29, from 6pm to 8pm at the Saville Exchange in North Shields, aims to build on those figures.

Carol said: “Before setting up Musa Fine Arts I really lacked confidence and doubted my own ability.

“But within the first 12 months of trading I had turned over more than £500,000, so despite my lack of experience and traditional business skills, I was doing something right.

“I hope by telling my story and sharing some of my practical advice that I can encourage others in a similar position to take the plunge and set up on their own.

“With employment opportunities today being pretty scarce, now is a really good time to take the leap into business.”
