Talk on first shots fired in 1914

An interesting talk entitled ‘The First Shots’ renamed from ‘Sunderland Bombardment 1914’ was given at the Cullercoats Mens Club.

Retired science teacher Mike Scott gave the background to the start of the naval war along the east coast.

John Brown-King was acknowledged as the man to fire the first shots against a German ship laying sea mines along the River Thames Estuary.

The bombardment of Sunderland was cancelled three times when each time the Germans found out that our ships were patrolling the areas.
