STAFF who have been helping promote the borough to visitors have been praised for their work after being honoured at a prestigious industry ceremony.

The team at North Shields Tourist Information Centre won the silver award for the category of Visitor Information Provider of the Year in the North East England Tourism Awards.

The accolade follows the results of a VisitEngland mystery shopper survey last year, which ranked the centre number one in the north east and fifth out of the 275 assessed nationally.

Mayor Linda Arkley said: “This is more well-deserved recognition for the fantastic service offered by our tourist information centres.

“Tourism is worth £243m to the local economy and our team has a crucial role in welcoming visitors to North Tyneside.

“I would like to congratulate them on their success and I know they’re already looking to build on this achievement.”

North Shields Tourist Information Centre is based at the Royal Quays Outlet Centre next to the International Ferry Terminal. Between April and December 2012, it had 51,359 visitors and dealt with 31,148 enquiries.

Elsewhere, Whitley Bay Tourist Information Centre, currently based in Park Road, will be moving to the Whitley Bay Customer First Centre, in York Road, in the spring.
