A group of youngsters are celebrating after completing the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh programme.

The 43 teenagers were presented with their certificates by Mayor Norma Redfearn at a ceremony at Marden High School, North Shields.

The 14 to 18-year-olds completed either the Bronze, Silver or Gold part of the programme, taking part in activities such as camping, conservation work, or volunteering in charity shops.

Mrs Redfearn said: “The young people should be very proud of themselves; it’s not only an extremely prestigious award but it’s recognition of their successful journey of self-discovery and development.

“I would like to also take this opportunity to thank the volunteers for giving up their free time to arrange expeditions and take part in events.”
