Arsonists targeted a Wallsend pub on Tuesday night, causing the tenants in the flat above to be evacuated.
Police are appealing for information after the fire at 10.12pm on Tuesday, March 4, at the Rose Inn at Rosehill Bank in Wallsend.
Three occupants in an upstairs flat got out of the property unharmed.
Enquiries have established that a window was smashed and the premises set on fire.
DI Steve Wouldhave said: “There were three people in the flat above the pub, and while they fortunately got out unharmed, this could have had far worse consequences.
“We’re carrying out enquiries into this arson and would urge anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area or who has information about who is involved to get in touch as soon as possible.”
