The over 50s to take centre stage at borough festival

A MONTH long festival has been launched with a host of activities on offer for those over the age of 50.

The Age Takes Centre Stage festival was kicked off on Monday with Roman soldiers on hand at Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend to mark the launch.

Visitors were treated to singing in the bath house, Roman centurions Maximus and Jefficus explaining about life in Wallsend in Roman times, plus the opportunities to play Roman board games, paint frescos, make Roman pottery and mosaics.

And a host of other events and activities will take place throughout the month for the over 50s.

There is an undersea safari every Thursday at 2pm in Tynemouth's Blue Reef Aquarium, special deals for carpet bowls and ten-pin bowling, computer classes and more.

David Charlton, chairman of the Age Takes Centre Stage planning group, said: "The launch is just the first day of a whole month of activities for people over 50.

"From croquet to surfing, computers to tea dances, there is an enormous range of opportunities to enjoy right up to the Hallowe'en Mystery Walk and the Last Night of the Proms on October 31."

The full festival programme is available in North Tyneside libraries or by calling by (0191) 280 8498.
