Thief jailed after purse theft

A Wallsend thief has been jailed after stealing an elderley woman’s purse.

Ashleigh Cragg, 38, of Alexandra Street in Wallsend appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates’ court on Wednesday, April 2, charged with theft.

She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment.

Cragg was arrested on Tuesday, April 1.

On March 25, police received a report that an elderly woman’s purse had been stolen when she was in Iceland in Bedford Street in North Shields.

Chief Inspector Jamie Pitt, of North Tyneside Area Command, said: “This should act as a warning to all thieves that the police and courts will not tolerate this type of offending and that criminals will be jailed in these circumstances.”

Northumbria Police is currently running Operation Soundwave targeting crimes such as theft.
