Top marks for schools in health initiatives

HEALTH services at two borough high schools have been given national recognition for work to make them more young people friendly.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s services at Whitley Bay High School and George Stephenson High School, in Killingworth, achieved the You’re Welcome status.

The trust’s public health nurses hold regular drop-ins at the schools, providing advice on issues including drugs, alcohol, smoking, mental health and wellbeing, relationships and sexual health.

The You’re Welcome award is a Department of Health initiative to demonstrate health services are accessible and confidential to people aged 11 to 19.

Young people who used the service were involved in the evaluation and formed part of the accreditation team that visited the schools and provided feedback.

Students and staff at both high schools have been heavily involved in making health services more accessible to young people as part of the accreditation; working with NHS staff to review how the service is run, the information available and how the service is publicised.

Sandra Kay, specialist community public health school nurse at the trust, who leads on the initiative, said: “It is important to be encouraging young people to access health services because it promotes health and wellbeing.

“By talking to, and working with, young people we can understand better what they see as barriers to accessing health services, take steps to remove them and improve services.

“We are really proud of the young people and the schools for achieving You’re Welcome status.”
