SHOPPERS have named their favourite high street businesses.

More than 1,500 people voted in the Top of the Shops competition to find those with the best customer service in North Shields, Wallsend and Whitley Bay.

Fifteen companies were nominated, with one winner per town.

In North Shields, yourPrintDepartment was voted top after securing 66 per cent of the town’s votes.

Rob Thompson, from Crafty Little Devils, won for Wallsend after getting 45 per cent of the votes.

And it was a close competition in Whitley Bay, with family-run FE Maughan Ltd taking first prize with 21 per cent of the votes.

Mayor Linda Arkley presented the winners with their trophies.

She said: “Such a wide range of shops and services were put forward for this award, which really demonstrates the diversity of our high street businesses.

“Such a high number of customers voted for their favourite businesses in this contest, and it is a shame they couldn’t all win.”

Rob Gibbons, from yourPrintDepartment, said: “For us, Top of the Shops has been much more than a competition. It’s forced us to re-examine the service we offer our customers and has helped us focus on what we want to achieve in our business. ”

Michael Maughan, from FE Maughan, added: “It is a great honour to receive an award like this to prove that town centre shops still have a major role in giving towns a heart.”

Rob Thompson said: “I have always believed strongly in giving good customer service and I encourage my staff to deliver great customer service.”
