Tournament aids charity

JJB SOCCERDOME was the host to a football tournament this week to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Eaga plc organised the event with more than 50 teams coming from as far away as Belfast to compete, including teams from its company, contractors and suppliers.

Rivalry was friendly but competitive throughout the competition and eaga's Belfast based subsidiary HEAT won the men's final and a team from eaga in Newcastle won the trophy for the women.

Chief Executive of eaga plc John Clough said: "As a former employee-owned organisation we have always encouraged our staff to get involved in local community-based initiatives and supported their efforts wherever possible.

"This was very much one of those employee-led events, with staff from right across our divisions showing just how much eaga cares for our communities.

"It was also great to see so many of those who partner us as contractors and suppliers, joining in to make a difference."

The tournament managed to raise ,800, which goes directly to Cancer Research UK.

Event organiser and eaga Manager Kim Steward said: "We have supported Cancer Research UK in the past, but I was keen to do more.

"The response from my colleagues and so many business partners was outstanding. They turned out on a Sunday and made the day great fun and highly rewarding. This is certainly an event well worth repeating."
