Tunnel set to hit the silver screen
THE cyclists’ tunnel linking North Tyneside to Jarrow is featured in a film about to hit the silver screen.
The grade II-listed tunnel is used as a location for a short film set to be shown at festivals around Europe.
London-based film-makers Nico and Yan Martin travelled up to Howdon for the three-day shoot last month.
Called Dick Lorent, the 12-minute film, described as a psychological thriller, is set entirely in the 60-year-old tunnel.
Nico said: “We had a very clear picture in our heads for the setting of our film. We researched possible locations, and when we came across the Tyne pedestrian and cyclist tunnels on the web, they seemed to be exactly what we were looking for.
“We contacted the tunnels’ owners and came up to see them for ourselves. They were perfect for our needs.
“We are so grateful to Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority for giving us permission to make our film here.”
Paul Fenwick, the authority’s project director, said: “The tunnels are unique and provide an interesting setting for photographers and film-makers.
“We were delighted to allow Nico and Yan to film in the cyclist tunnel and wish them every success with it.”
