Turning over a new leaf as book buyers

YOUNG people have gone from bookworms to book buyers.

North Tyneside Council has been getting the views from a group of youngsters about what books they would like to see in the new Whitley Bay Library, to be based in the Whitley Bay Customer First Centre.

The library will feature around 8,000 new books, along with others transferred from the current facility in Park Road.

A focus group – consisting of ten children aged between 11 and 15 – has helped the book buying process by saying what authors and titles they would like to see available to borrow for children and teenagers.

And they are continuing to be involved by giving their views about what events they would like to see at the library once it opens.

Coun George Westwater, cabinet member for community and regulatory services, said: “We want to ensure Whitley Bay Customer First Centre, including its new library, meets the needs of our residents.

“That’s one of the reasons why our team created a user group, which has enabled residents to help shape the facility’s development.

“This focus group involving young people is another way that we’re getting the views of those that matter.

“I would like to thank our residents for their contribution to date and hope they continue to work with us to ensure the facility is the big success that we believe it will be.”

Whitley Bay Customer First Centre is due to open in the spring in York Road behind the old Coliseum building. It will feature a new library plus a customer services advice suite, a self contained primary health care service suite, a police drop-in facility, tourist information centre, community rooms and Age UK information and advice suite.
