Vandals cause match postponement for North Shields

VANDALS caused North Shields Football Club to postpone their fixture with Chester-le-Street on Wednesday night, after they filled the sockets for the goal posts with cement.

Just a few hours before kick off when club officials were preparing for the game, and noticed the holes had been filled in and topped off with cement at the Dan Person Stadium.

And the pitch could have been left like that for weeks, as North Shields haven’t played a home fixture since the middle of November 2012.

Chairman Alan Matthews said: “It’s a source of great embarrassment not being able to fulfil a fixture, especially with the back log of fixtures the Northern League have over the winter period.

“Because of the bad weather we have not had a home game since November 19, and for all we have been at the ground every day maintaining it, we haven’t thought to check the actual sockets.

“It’s also cost us in revenue too.”

Club officials noticed the sockets had been filled, and topped off with concrete or cement, and were unable to hammer it out to get the goals up.

Mr Matthews said: “We haven’t had anything like this happen for ten years.”
Efforts are now being made to make sure the top of the table clash against Ryhope CW at home on Saturday can go ahead, and the match against Chester Le Street will be rearranged,

Northumbria Police said enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191.
