Vicar uses written word to raise charity cash

A VICAR is using his talent for the written word to raise money for charity.

Rev Phil Hughes, crown vicar of Holywell and area police chaplain for North Tyneside, will be giving all of the profits from his book, If God Had Granted Me A Son: The Life and Works of Richard Crashaw, An Appreciation, to the Cardiomyopathy Association and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Coronary Care Unit.

The 51-year-old has also dedicated the book to his brother, David, who died of heart failure last year, aged 47.

Rev’d Hughes said: “David died after several years of struggle with Dilated Cardiomyopathy, which means he had heart failure in every part of his heart.

“He spent so much time at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital’s Coronary Care Unit, Ward 24, and it’s where he passed away.

“I want to help those who are suffering and the hospital needs pieces of equipment for the heart ward.”

Having already raised £1,000 for the Cardiomyopathy Association with his first book on Crashaw in 2007, Rev’d Hughes, originally from Shropshire, is expecting the second edition to fetch around £2,500.

Crashaw (1613-1649) was part of the 17th Century Metaphysical School of poets and specialised in religious poetry.

Rev’d Hughes said: “I am really proud to have produced another book and I hope that people who have never heard of Richard Crashaw before might, out of curiosity, buy the book.

“He is a poet that strived to be close to God and his poetry is just inspirational.

“But at the same time, it is all for a very good cause and it will go to help current suffers of heart conditions.”

If God Had Granted Me A Son: The Life and Works of Richard Crashaw, An Appreciation is a limited edition and costs £10.

It is available to buy from Seghill Vicarage, on Mares Close, Seghill, or by e-mailing p.hughes.1@btinternet.com
