Vipers encouraging pupils to try out different sports

SCHOOLCHILDREN in Whitley Bay welcomed members of Newcastle Vipers ice hockey into their school hall.

Class teacher and PE co-ordinator Claire Oldfield also plays for the ladies Vipers team and organised the visit to encourage children to try out different sports.

Claire, 24, will also be representing Great Britain in the World Championships in ice hockey in Hungary over the next two weeks.

Claire said part of the visit was to encourage young kids to believe in themselves and try out different sports.

"It is all about encouraging the kids to participate in something that they want to do and introduce them to different types of sport that are out there," she said.

"We also want to promote healthy lifestyles to the youngsters.

"The players came and talked about healthy eating and why exercise is so important in young children."

Claire, who is a former pupil of Monkseaton High School, has been playing for Great Britain for 11 years.

She said: "I love representing Great Britain.

"I enjoy being able to travel to different parts of the world and being part of a team."

Claire will be in Hungary for the World Championships from April 2 to April 13.
