Former soldiers and sailors have been honoured for their roles serving their country.

Dozens of war veterans living in the borough took part in a special event on Monday to mark Armed Forces Day.

They gathered at the White Swan Centre, in Killingworth, to be presented with lapel badges to honour their roles and dedication to their country.

The event was organised by North Tyneside Council, with the support of North Tyneside Veterans Committee.

It started with an Armed Forces Day flag being raised, followed by a ceremony which featured a presentation of the lapel badges to ex-service personnel. Youngsters from Amberley Primary School’s children’s choir also entertained the crowd with a special musical performance.

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “Here in North Tyneside, we are extremely proud of our servicemen and woman, both past and present.

“Awarding the badges is just one way in which we can show our appreciation and admiration for the veterans.”

Anyone who has served in the armed forces, including within the volunteer and regular reserves and currently resides in North Tyneside, was able to apply for the badge.

The service was part of a programme of events that have been arranged for the lead up to, and including, national Armed Forces Day on Saturday.
