Warning to be alert against bogus fish sellers

RESIDENTS are being warned to be on their guard against unscrupulous door-to-door sellers.

Police are warking residents in the borough after an eldery woman invited a fish seller into her home on Wednesday, February 15, and was then faced with an inflated priced when she refused to pay.

The woman, from Blandford Road, North Shields, was approached by the seller and asked to pay £160 for fish worth far less.

Detective Inspector Neil Brotherton said: “People should never hand money over to someone who cold-calls at their home and never let them inside. Reputable fish sellers will never ask for money up front.

“Look out for relatives and neighbours and if you do see any suspicious vehicles or people in your neighbourhood you should report this to police as soon as possible.

“Every incident involving an illegal trader, bogus caller or fraudulent work that is reported to police is investigated immediately. These types of reports are treated as a priority, especially those involving an elderly or vulnerable victim.”

Anyone with information about unsolicited callers who may be bogus should contact Northumbria Police on the new 101 non-emergency number.
