Work begins to recover lorry overturned near Tyne Tunnel

WORK has begun on trying to remove a lorry which overturned this morning.

A crane and a JCB are now on the scene at the roundabout on the A193 Tynemouth Road, at the junction with the A19, after the lorry overturned at 10am today.

The road has been closed since the accident to allow for the rescue work, which began just after 1pm, and get the lorry back on its wheels.

Police officers had been anticipating the clearance to take up to six hours, with the road being reopened in time for rush hour at 5pm.

Diversions are currently in place, with motorists still able to use the A193 to get into Wallsend.
