Work set to continue on wildlife site
Brierdene Nature Reserve at Whitley Bay.
A POPULAR green oasis in Whitley Bay has now been designated as a local wildlife site.
Brierdene, which stretches from The Links to Whitley Bay Golf Course, was originally designated as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance in October 1992.
Officials at the Friends of Brierdene say the name change will not make any difference to the area as it just ties in with latest rulings.
And volunteers at the friends have recently submitted a new Conservation Management Play for the site, outlining their proposed work from 2013 to 2018.
They are now just waiting for the response from the biodiversity officer at North Tyneside Council.
Last year, there was 2,389 volunteer hours put into maintaining and looking after the dene, the highest on record.
Funding is now being sought to provide a noticeboard at the eastern entrance to the dene, while the friends have also applied for two grants for planned conservation and improvement work this year.
Work planned this month includes general maintenance in all areas – such as cut, clear and sow – but are all dependant on the weather following the recent heavy rain.
