Work to create a boulevard in village

North Tyneside Councils workforce co-ordinator Lee Hunter, Mayor Linda Arkley and construction manager John Thompson check on the progress of improvement work in Cullercoats.

WORK to improve a stretch of coastline for pedestrians, cyclists and businesses is continuing on schedule.

Improvements are being made to the road and footpaths in the Victoria Crescent area of Cullercoats to create a ‘boulevard feel’.

Capita Symonds is carrying out the work on behalf of North Tyneside Council to narrow and relay the road, create wider footpaths, erect 15 new cycle stands, new bins and floral planters, a granite surround for the listed drinking fountain, and a pedestrian crossing.

And the footpath is being widened at the Queens Head pub to allow the coastal cycle path to be extended right through Cullercoats.

Work – which began on February 18 – is due to last 14 weeks, although the footpath widening is expected to be completed before Good Friday, March 29.

The £300,000 scheme is part of the council’s £1m investment in Cullercoats, with other works already completed including a new playsite, additional car parking, and new pedestrian crossing points.

Mayor Linda Arkley, who saw first hand how the work is progressing, said: “Our coastline is one of North Tyneside’s greatest assets.

“There have been plenty of achievements already through out Coastal Regeneration Strategy and this Cullercoats scheme is another example of how we’re delivering real improvements.

“It will provide much better environment for pedestrians and cyclists plus provide an opportunity for businesses, particularly the food and drink retailers, to take advantage of the increased space outside their premises.”
