Work on new link under way

WORK is under way on creating a new boulevard in Wallsend.

A £200,000 pedestrian link is taking shape along Atkinson Street, pictured, the main route between Wallsend Metro station and the town centre, as part of North Tyneside Council’s efforts to regenerate the town.

It will include new paving, signage and trees, plus a new pedestrianised area.

Borough mayor Linda Arkley said: “As a well-used pedestrian route, its upgrade should have a significant impact on the town centre’s regeneration, and it will complement the Metro station’s upgrade.

“It’s one of a number of exciting developments in Wallsend that the council is directly delivering or working with partners to bring forward.

“There really is a lot to be positive about.”

Work on the new boulevard is expected to be completed by the end of next month.
