Work starts on medical centre

WORK has begun on building a new health centre in Monkseaton.

The £2.8m building will replace the existing Monkseaton Medical Centre in Cauldwell Avenue.

The new building is being constructed behind the existing building by Gateshead-based Koru Property Services for MedicX.

The £1.75m contract for the construction of the centre will create 35 jobs on site.

As well as being bigger than the existing surgery, the new two-storey medical centre will offer a pharmacy and a larger car park, with 37 spaces.

Ken Jones, site manager for Koru Property Services, said: “We have been tasked with providing a quality and modern replacement for the existing building which will cater for Monkseaton Medical Centre’s increasing patient numbers.”

Over the last 25 years, the number of patients treated by the practice has doubled, leaving the current building struggling to cope.

Mr Jones added: “We have paid particular attention to the needs of the local community during construction of the new facility.

“We have addressed safety concerns by relocating the site entrance, as well as erecting safety hoardings between the site and Langley First School next door.”

Nigel Pashley, regional director for MedicX, said: “We are delighted to be involved with Monkseaton Medical Practice in the delivery of this brand new building and the huge benefits it will bring to the community in terms of improved health provision.”

Construction work is expected to be completed in December this year.
