A group of teenagers have created a helpful DVD for their peers in relation to visiting a sexual health service.

The new film will be used by school nurses, teaching staff and health professionals when talking to young people about sexual health.

During the short five-minute film, viewers are taken to the One to One Centre in Shiremoor and shown a nurse holding an appointment.

Produced by North Tyneside Council’s Young Person’s Health and Wellbeing Group and the YMCA’s Young Health Champions, it was premiered at the Jam Jar Cinema in Whitley Bay.

Director of public health for North Tyneside, Marietta Evans, said: “The DVD is an excellent resource and will make a big difference, helping to show just how accessible the centre is.

“Visiting a sexual health service can be a daunting experience for any young person, but knowing what to expect will assist in allaying any fears they may have.”

Dr Helen Mcilveen, clinical manager for sexual health at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are delighted to be working alongside young people to create this film and raise awareness of our free sexual health services.”

She added: “We offer a one stop shop for young people providing friendly confidential screening, treatment, support and advice to meet all of your sexual health needs, whatever your situation.”

The One to One centre has also recently been awarded ‘You’re Welcome’ status – a national quality framework from the Department of Health to ensure that health services are young person friendly.

The One to One Centre on Brenkley Avenue, Shiremoor, provides a range of services.

Appointments can be made by calling (0191) 297 0441, or alternatively, the centre also offers a drop-in and queue service. For more information visit www.northumbria.nhs.uk/sexualhealth
