Youngsters join in racism battle
IN A BID to tackle racism, hundreds of children from a Whitley Bay school took part in a poster launch through Show Racism the Red Card event last week.
Valley Gardens Middle School welcomed players and coaching staff from the Newcastle Eagle basketball team last Wednesday, where Show Racism launched their new educational DVD which has an anti racist theme.
Afterwards the DVD a Question and Answer session was hosted by ex-Newcastle United player and Radio Newcastle commentator John Anderson.
The children asked the sports stars questions about tackling racists and what can be done to stop it, and how the Eagles are involved in preventing racism.
The manager of Newcastle Eagles, Fabulous Flournoy, told the News Guardian: "We have come today to promote Show Racism the Red Card, and it is something we have done every year for a while now.
"The campaign is a huge campaign run throughout the country and we want to help spread the word of anti racism. It is very important for the children to be involved with this from a young age.
"Racism is nothing but ignorance and fear and if we are able to educate them about it now then they will be fearless of different races as they grow up."
The children competed to ask the best question, and a number of them were given prizes including signed memorabilia and match tickets.
Ged Grebby, the project co-ordinator, said: "Show Racism the Red Card are delighted to launch the Newcastle Eagles Show Racism the Red Card poster with a team who have always been strong supporters of this local campaign.
"Due to the great support we have received from the Eagles and our campaign sponsors, we have been able to print thousands of Eagles anti-racism posters this season, for free distribution. We will unveil these posters on the day and we very much look forward to what will be a memorable event.
"Show Racism the Red Card have been in existence for 12 years.
"The organisation aims to harness the high profile of professional athletes to combat racism in society. We use sports people as anti-racist role models in our educational resources which have been acclaimed throughout Europe."
