Man arrested after bike incident on Coast Road

A man has been arrested after motorists’ lives were put in danger.

A bicycle was thrown onto the Coast Road near Billy Mill roundabout in North Shields at 10.30am on Saturday.

A motorcyclist stopped his motorbike to remove the cycle when a man standing nearby tried to steal it.

After running to stop him, and the bike was thrown again onto the carriageway, nearly causing a collision.

Enquiries were carried out and police arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of the attempted theft of a motorbike and causing danger to road users. He remains in police custody.

Chief Inspector Stephen Readdie, said: “Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and we appeal for anyone who may have information to help to contact police.

“Throwing any objects into the road is reckless and incredibly dangerous and this incident could have caused a serious accident on what is an extremely busy stretch of road.”
