Man arrested after knife attack in North Tyneside

Police are appealing for witnesses after a shop worker was attacked with a knife in North Tyneside.

The assault happened just before 9.45pm last night at the Drinks Express store on Coach Road in Wallsend.

A man entered the store and was challenged by a member of staff due to his suspicious behaviour.

He attacked the male shop worker with a knife, before leaving the scene.

The man suffered cuts to his face and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be serious.

A short time later a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. He is currently in custody.
