A man has died after being hit by a lorry near Monkseaton.

The 49-year-old man, who has not been named by police, was hit by a lorry on the A192 Earsdon Road, just 200 metres north of the roundabout with Monkseaton Drive.

Police say the man died at the scene while the 51-year-old driver of the lorry was left uninjured but shocked after the collision.

The road was closed for three hours between the Red Lion pub and the roundabout outside the Beacon pub while investigations into the accident took place.

Officers say they have spoken to a number of witnesses but are keen to hear from anyone else who saw the accident which happened at 4.45pm on Tuesday, July 30.
