A man is receiving hospital treatment after having an noxious substance thrown at him during a street robbery.

Two men assaulted the 43-year-old victim before throwing the substance at him and making off with his mobile phone.

The incident happened at around 2.10am on Wednesday, November 11, in Wagon Way, Shiremoor.

The man was taken to hospital and is receiving treatment for his injuries.

One of the offenders, who ran off in the direction of Earsdon Road, is described as around 5ft 8inches tall, of stocky build and had a small moustache.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact police.

Detective Inspector Dave English said: “We’re carrying out enquiries into the robbery and want to hear from any witnesses.

“We would ask anyone who was in the Wagon Ways area of Shiremoor in the early hours of this morning and may have information to help to come forward.

“Extra officers will be in the area, both carrying out enquiries and reassuring those who may be concerned.”
