A pensioner has proved it is never too late to learn with an award success.
Maurice Goodwin, from Howdon, has won the prestigious North East Senior Learner Award for the borough.
The 79-year-old had struggled with reading all his life before being told three years ago that he had dyslexia.
Maurice joined a course at North Tyneside Adult Learning Alliance, passing levels 1 and 2 of the literacy course.
A volunteer with Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and Families Association (SSAFA), he said: “Learning has changed my life.
“My outlook on life has changed – I no longer feel handicapped and I have more confidence and aspirations.”
He hopes to inspire younger people learn English and maths skills and has gone on to start writing his memoirs.
