Have your say

I’d like to congratulate Mayor Norma Redfearn in successfully fighting off the attempt by the Labour party to get rid of the mayoral system.

As we now have a mayoral system for at least the next ten years, I would ask the mayor to implement the system as it should be.

I believe we have had a very twisted version of the system since it was first introduced.

What we now need is the introduction of scrutiny committees that scrutinise the items on the council plan before the mayor and cabinet make their decision.

Currently, I feel they are prevented from doing any such thing by the length, frequency and agenda of the meeting.

With the remuneration committee basing their recommendations on the average councillor time being 25 hours per month, they are being paid a pro-rata rate of over £70,000 a year and I think they should be doing something to earn it.

Most importantly, there is something that doesn’t seem right about the mayor (head of the executive) being the leader of the overwhelming majority group and being able to tell it how to vote.

She should stop being Labour group leader. It is anti-democratic.

If nothing else, we should move forward from this ringing endorsement of the system by the people of North Tyneside by implementing it properly.
