More than 1,500 items created from donated wool

I WOULD like to thank readers for their generous response to our recent appeal for unused balls of wool.

We have collected enough wool from your readers to produce more than 1,500 items of knitwear that will be given to poverty-stricken children in developing countries around the world, which will be delivered over the next few months.

The first consignment of 1,000 items will be going to Bolivia and the second consignment will be taken to Romania by a young lady from Durham University, who we are sponsoring to work there as a volunteer.

Age UK has an army of talented knitters working on these projects and their weekly output is truly impressive.

I wish that they could actually witness the look of delight on the faces of the children, who literally have nothing, when they are given the brightly-coloured hats, scarves, gloves and jumpers that they have made for them.

We will, of course, be taking photographs and videos when the knitwear is handed over to the children in both countries and these will be shown at future meetings of Age UK in Whitley Bay.

Thank you once again for your help.
