Motorists are all buoyed up

DRIVERS heading through the new Tyne Tunnel are now being given a special welcome to North Tyneside’s coast.

Three former marine buoys covered in historic poster-style images of the borough’s coast have been sited at the tunnel’s northbound exit in Howdon.

Artist Lynda Nelson created and painted designs featuring St Mary’s Lighthouse, Tynemouth Priory and a surfer on the 10ft-tall buoys.

The £15,000 commission was a joint project by North Tyneside Council and Tyne Tunnel operator TT2.

Lynda said: “‘I’m really happy with the way the buoys have turned out.

“I’m amazed by how many motorists will see them each day, and I hope they’ll be enjoyed for years to come.

“I’ve taken a drive through the tunnel already to see how the look, and I think they fit in nicely with all of the landscaping work that has been done around the tunnel exit and should serve as a good introduction to North Tyneside and all it has to offer.”
