Motorists are being advised to give themselves extra time as work starts on a triple decker roundabout.

Initial work is underway on a £75m Highways England project to create the new junction at Silverlink roundabout.

The aim is to reduce congestion and improve journey times for those using the A19 and A1058 Coast Road.

Drivers are being encouraged to give themselves extra time to complete their journeys as narrow lanes on both the southbound and northbound carriageways on the A19 and a 30mph speed limit are now in place.

Highways England project manager Julie Alexander said: “As well as reduced congestion and more reliable journeys, this project will improve safety for the thousands of drivers that use the junction each day as well as providing better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

“We’d encourage drivers still needing to travel through the area during the road works to leave a bit of extra time to complete journeys, especially at peak times.”

Drivers are reminded they can check traffic conditions before setting out on journeys.

Highways England provides live traffic information via its website, local and national radio travel bulletins, electronic road signs and mobile apps. Local Twitter services are also available at @highwaysNEAST
