Neither folklore or reason is required

WITH reference to the letter (News Guardian, September 8) about the statue of the mermaid proposed for the Black Middens rocks at the mouth of the Tyne personally I think it is a lovely idea.

The argument was that we have no ‘folklore or reason’ in our area to justify a mermaid and therefore she thought it was not such a good idea.

But how does she compare that with the fact that there is no ‘folklore or reason’ for an Angel of the North, but we all welcomed that statue, and it has become a popular landmark for the north east.
