A new tearoom is causing a stir less than a month after opening.
Ian Jones and his partner Krystyna Dodds have overseen the transformation of a neglected cafe to create Curiously Wicked’s DAPPERS in Northumberland Place, North Shields.
And the 1920s-style cafe has been boosted with the appointment of one of Newcastle’s top chefs, Dan Duggan.
Ian said: “The beautiful Georgian property had been a cafe for over 30 years but it was crying out for some TLC.”
As well as breakfast, light bites and lunches, the venue is host to a large display of wedding and celebration cakes, thanks to head cake artist Krystyna.
She said: “We wanted to create a room that was not only representative of the cake making part of DAPPERS but also somewhere that was an attraction in North Shields.
“We have so much fun designing cakes. We even offer the opportunity for couples to stir their cake for luck.”
“It’s a really old tradition that has all but died out but it means that these special wedding day memories, begin with us.”
Dan grew up in the local area and as such is just as eager to maintain local heritage.
He said: “I’m delighted to be working with DAPPERS and I’m extremely excited to bring all my learning and experience to North Shields.
“It’s the remainder of the original fishing community and as we’re extremely passionate about working with local suppliers, we’re very keen to support them in every way we can by offering their excellent produce, including fish and seafood, to our customers.”
Ian said: “We’re very proud to have Dan working with us. A chef of his calibre is exactly what Dappers needs.”
DAPPERS is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm and serves breakfast, lunches, light bites and Afternoon Tea.
