Youngsters are being encouraged to keep their brains active during holidays.

Ex-teacher Kelly Skinner has opened the Kumon Whitley Bay Study Centre at Whitley Bay Customer First Centre in York Road.

Children who study for as little as 20 to 30 minutes a day over the summer holidays find the transition back to school in September much easier

Kumon offers maths and English programmes to children of all ages and abilities, developing them through the acquisition of independent learning rather than teaching in the conventional sense.

Kelly said: “With a new academic year approaching fast, now is a great time to ensure children get to grips with the core subjects of maths and English, as well as the vital learning skills, which can take students beyond their current school level.

“We have had children as young as three who have started studying with us and parents have been overjoyed to see how concentration levels have increased in a short space of time.”

On both programmes, each student follows their own path of study; moving through the levels at their own pace before progressing to more advanced work.

Kelly added: “Children who study for as little as 20 to 30 minutes a day over the summer holidays find the transition back to school in September much easier.

“They have increased levels of concentration and highly developed work skills that help them tackle the fresh challenges of a new academic year.”

The summer break provides a great opportunity for children to settle into a new routine of daily Kumon study, before getting off to a flying start in the new school year.

Kelly said: “As a Kumon instructor and ex Primary School teacher of 18 years, I have always seen the benefits of continuing to study daily over the holidays.

“Children can often find the start of a new academic year overwhelming, however Kumon can help children develop the confidence to confront new challenges and succeed.”
