A NEW registered charity based in the borough has this week been launched.

The charity’s honorary chief executive officer, Barbara Connors-Fowler, said: “Our aim is to advance the common good through mobilising and equipping individuals and groups for voluntary action and charitable giving.

“It is our intention to bring together people and organisations with the passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done by helping to improve communities and individual lives in lasting and measurable ways.

“We aim to be a strategic support organisation for both donors and beneficiaries and, in the next year, we will be supporting more than 100 charities and good causes with financial donations, technical expertise, professional advice and volunteer support.”

Chairman Hari Shukla added: “Our approach is grounded in our core belief that individual and group voluntary action, independent of the state and motivated for public benefit rather than profit, is the basis for a strong and health civil society.”

Angels of the North is taking over charitable work previously carried out by the now-defunct Rotary Club of Monkseaton Centenary.

Anyone wanting to volunteer can contact trustee Carl Hire on (0191) 252 8405.
